Women’s Basketball To Host Sixth Annual “Math Madness” Tuesday

Worcester, MA --- For the sixth time in as many years, the Worcester State women's basketball team will be hosting a "Math Madness" event for local elementary and middle school students this Tuesday at 12 PM against Keene State.

The event, which will be held at WPI's Harrington Auditorium, will allow local children the opportunity to enrich their math skills through basketball.

With approximately 400 students expected to participate from the May Street School, the Chandler Magnet School, the Tatnuck Magnet School and the Forest Grove Middle School, the event is designed to offer students the opportunity to answer questions from grade appropriate math packets.

The questions will engage the students in solving problems related to player's statistics, scores, averages, court dimensions, the height of the basket from the floor and other math equations.

Immediately following the conclusion of the contest, students will have the opportunity to meet and greet players from both teams.

Worcester State enters the contest at 3-7 as the Lancers won both of their matchups at home last semester.

Senior Meaghan Burns (W. Brookfield, MA) leads the club with 14.3 points per game and 17 steals while sophomore Julie Frankian (Millbury, MA) has averaged 11.2 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists in 10 games. Junior Kiesha Jones (Worcester, MA/Doherty) also averages 10.0 points per game and senior Emily Barrett (Dracut, MA) has pulled down 6.4 boards per contest.

Keene State is 6-3 and comes off a 74-68 triumph over Austin in overtime to take home the Key Largo Classic Tournament trophy this past week.

Junior Christen Wojitas (Amherst, NH) paces the Owls with 13.9 PPG while freshman Stephanie D'Amolfo (Tyngsboro, MA) has impressed with 9.4 points, 6.1 caroms and 4.7 assists in nine games. Sophomore Kelsey Cognetta (Stamford, CT) rounds out the squad with 11.0 points per game and 3.0 assists.

Keene State holds the 9-5 all-time edge as they have taken three out of the last four since the 2009-10 campaign. Ironically, the one win for the Lancers was a thrilling 58-52 extra session victory in the only other time WSU has hosted the Owls for "Math Madness."
