WORCESTER, Mass. – A second half surge for the Connecticut College Camels led them to a 65-34 road win over the Lancers of Worcester State Wednesday (Nov. 30) evening inside the Lancer Gymnasium.
Connecticut College shined on both offense and defense as they tallied 18 team steals and caused 38 Lancer turnovers that resulted in a total of 35 points for the Camels.
Payon Ouimette (Medfield, Mass.) led the visiting team with 14 points and eight rebounds. Teammates Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) and Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.) each scored eight points, while Liz Malman (Mendham, N.J.) and Erin Feeney (Newington, Conn.) netted seven apiece. Samantha Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) chipped in six points for the Camels and grabbed a team-high four assists. Malman registered a team-best four steals on the evening.
Worcester State's Britt Herring (W. Brookfield, Mass.) led the Lancers' offense with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds – five of which were offensive. She also grabbed a game-best five steals and shot 50 percent from the field. Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) and Bianca Langford (Worcester, Mass.) tallied six points apiece while Langford blocked a game-high four shots throughout the contest.
The first quarter started off with back-and-forth play as the score was tied three times and rolled into the second quarter knotted at 8-8. The second quarter was similar in that neither team led by more than three points. The Camels concluded the half with a 16-15 edge over the Lancers.
The Lancers saw their last lead of the game moments into the third period following a jumper from Langford. The Camels responded with a layup and a three from Caouette to snatch a four point lead. Worcester would close the gap to two seconds later, however, the Camels went on a 17-point blast increasing their lead to 19 with 4:15 remaining in the third.
After outscoring the Lancers 27-12 in the third stanza, the Camels kept the pace and held the Lancers to just seven points in the fourth to attain their largest lead of 31 at the conclusion of the game.
Next up, the Lancers travel to Wesleyan College for the Courtyard by Marriott Tournament to be played on Friday and Saturday. The Camels resume play on Friday (Dec. 2) when they host Ithaca College in a 7 p.m. non-conference matchup.
