Berkel Scores 19 Points in Lancers’ 61-53 Setback to Framingham State

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.- The Worcester State University women's basketball team fell to the Framingham State Rams 61-53 in a Saturday afternoon Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) matchup.

 

With the loss, the Lancers slip to 7-11 and 3-2 in the MASCAC, while the hosts improve to 14-3 and 4-1 in the league.

 

The Rams were led by Alycia Rackliffe (Feeding Hills, Mass.) who scored a team-high 12 points with 8 boards and two blocked shots. Raegan Mulherin (Baldwinville, Mass.) and Monta Connolly (Lynn, Mass.) added nine points apiece.

 

Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) scored a game-high 19 points including 15 in the second half to lead the Lancers. Britt Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards.

 

The Rams led 18-10 at the end of the first quarter but a 9-0 run for the Lancers gave the visitors a 19-18 lead halfway through the second frame. The Rams answered as the two teams entered the locker rooms with Framigham leading 27-25.

 

The close play continued through the 4th quarter with just over five minutes to play in regulation when Herring cut the Rams lead to 52-49. The Rams then broke off a 10-3 run capped by a Connolly layup with 46 ticks to go to make it a 59-51 advantage and put the game away for Framingham State.

 

The Rams shot 31.4% from the field and only 11.8% from long-range. The Lancers were 36.7% from the floor and did not connect from beyond the arc.

 

Framingham State returns to the hardwood on Wednesday, January 25th when they host Fitchburg State in MASCAC play. The Lancers are in action the same day when they host Westfield State.
