Women’s Basketball Drops Road Game to Connecticut College, 62-41

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Worcester State University women's basketball team dropped a road game at Connecticut College Wednesday (Nov. 29) evening by a score of 62-41.

1ST QUARTER

Following a tie score at 2-2, Connecticut College took a 4-point lead following a pair of free throws and a layup from Nancy Coulverson (South Ozone Park, N.Y.). Worcester State's Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) made a layup on the next possession, but Casey Walsh (Phoenixville, Pa.) made two free throws and Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) pushed the lead to six with a jumper halfway through the quarter and held the 6-point advantage going into the second frame.

 

2ND QUARTER

The Camels extended their lead to eight 15 seconds into the second on a Mairead Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) layup. Connecticut College maintained the 8-point advantage until Worcester State's Kate Surprenant (Pelham, N.H.) made two jumpers with six minutes remaining to put the Lancers back within four. The Lancers came within three with 3:14 on the clock following a layup from Britt Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.), though, the Camels' Ahsley Howe (Saco, Maine) and Walsh made triples with a minute to go to put Connecticut College up by seven at the half.

 

3RD QUARTER

The Camels came out of the locker room with a 6-0 run to advance their lead to 13. They kept slowly pushing ahead and saw their largest lead of 17 so far in the game with 4:45 to go in the third succeeding a 3-pointer from Walsh.

 

4TH QUARTER

The began the final quarter with a jumper from Sam Maglione (Lancaster, Mass.) to put Worcester State within 10, however, Connecticut College outscored Worcester State 17-8 in the final stanza to take the 62-41 win.

 

DOWN FOR A COUNT

  • Herring recorded a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds in the setback.
  • Maglione totaled 11 points on three triples and a jumper while Surprenant and Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) scored eight and six points, respectively.
  • Sweeney notched nine boards for Worcester State.
  • Three Camel players scored double-digits. Kylie Caouette (Ashburnham, Mass.), Walsh, and Hynes accounted for 32 points. Walsh went 3-for-4 from 3-point range.
  • Maggie Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) led the boards for the Camels.
  • Despite the setback, Worcester State posted a higher field goal percentage than Connecticut College, going 18-for-45 from the field (40%). Connecticut College shot 36.8%.
  • Connecticut College made half of their 3-point attempts.
  • The Camels shot a perfect 100% from the charity stripe, going 14-for-14.
  • Connecticut College forced 31 Lancer turnovers in the 40 minutes played.
