Women's Basketball Grabs Season-Opening Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. - Senior Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) totaled 13 points, 22 rebounds and three blocks to guide the Worcester State University women's basketball team to a 58-49 triumph over Clark in a 2018 Worcester City Tournament contest Friday night in WPI's Harrington Auditorium.

With the win, the Lancers move to 1-0 on the season, while the Cougars drop to 0-1.

The Lancers will vie for the program's fourth title tomorrow night when they face the hosts at 7 p.m. while the Cougars will meet Becker in the 5 p.m. consolation contest.

Sophomore Sam Maglione (Lancaster, Mass.) scored a game-best 15 points and registered three steals as junior Sam Ellis (Grafton, Mass.) notched eight points and logged six rebounds, and senior Brittany Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) amassed seven points and eight boards. Sophomores Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) and Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) combined for 13 caroms while LeMay also registered a contest-best four steals.

Senior Ogechi Ezemma (Hope Valley, R.I.) posted a 13-point, 13-rebound performance for Clark. Classmate Sam O'Gara (Worcester, Mass.) led the team with 14 points and sophomore Hannah Favalono (Blackstone, Mass.) chipped in with 10. Senior Maya Kerstetter (Northampton, Mass.) handed out four of the Cougars six assists.

Worcester State enjoyed a 62-49 margin in rebounds and Clark had the 15-13 edge in turnovers.
