Balanced Offense Leads Women's Basketball Past Mount Holyoke

WORCESTER, Mass. - Thirteen different players had buckets for the Lancers on Tuesday evening as the Worcester State University women's basketball team defeated Mount Holyoke 77-32 in its home opener at John P. Brissette Court.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 2-1 on the season, while the Lyons continue to seek their first win at 0-3.

Senior Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) was the leading Lancer in the first quarter, as Worcester's offense was firing from the start. Berkel, who earlier in the day was named the season's first Worcester Area College Basketball Association Player of the Week for 2018-19, put in seven points and six rebounds, as the Lancers led 20-9 after one quarter.

Senior captain Kate Surprenant (Pelham, N.H.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for 10 points in the second quarter as the Lancers continued to roll heading into the break. The Lancers out-scored the Lyons 22-7 in the quarter and went into the half ahead by a score of 42-16.

Brittany Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) and Sam Maglione (Lancaster, Mass.) each scored six points in the third quarter as the Lancers continued to pull away to open the second half. After three quarters, the Lancers led 65-25.

Freshman Jocelyn St. Onge (Ware, Mass.) had a strong fourth quarter showing for the Lancers to help the hosts close out the victory. The rookie scored six points in just four minutes of action in the quarter to lift the Lancers to the victory.

Surprenant was the game's high scorer on the evening with 14 points, while Berkel completed her third double-double in as many games with 11 points and 11 rebounds in the win.

Leading the way for Mount Holyoke was Katlyn Grover (Bernardston, Mass.), who finished the evening with eight points.

The Lancers will be back in action on Friday evening, as they play Denison at the Hunter College Tournament in New York City. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m.
