Women's Basketball Falls Short Against Denison

NEW YORK, N.Y. - Sophomore Sam Maglione (Lancaster, Mass.) scored 16 points off the bench on Friday evening, but the Worcester State University women's basketball team suffered a 64-52 defeat to Denison University in non-conference action at Hunter College's Hunter Sportsplex.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 2-2 on the season, and will face St. Joseph's (L.I.) in Saturday's consolation game at noon after the Golden Eagles fell to Hunter in the other first round game at the Hunter College Tournament on Friday.

Maglione scored 13 of her 16 points in the opening half, as the Lancers took a narrow 32-29 lead into the locker room. Strong three-point shooting was the story of the half for the Lancers, as the team went 5-for-9 from beyond the arc (55.6 percent) in the game's opening 20 minutes. Maglione was responsible for one of the triples, while freshman Calli Korbey (Hopkinton, Mass.) and junior Sam Ellis (Grafton, Mass.) each knocked one down.

The third quarter was a much different story however, as the Big Red outscored Worcester State 20-8 to go ahead by nine entering the fourth. Senior Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) scored four points in the quarter to lead Worcester State, but the Lancers had no answer for Lauren Longbrake (Groveport, Ohio), who scored eight points off the bench in the quarter.

The Lancers closed the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run, but it proved too little too late as the Big Red picked up the 64-52 victory over the Lancers on the evening.

Maglione's 16 was good for a share of the game high, matched with Denison's Alison Schafer (Columbia Station, Ohio). Berkel finished in double figures for the fourth consecutive game for the Lancers, tallying 10 points.
