WORCESTER, Mass. - Worcester State University suffered a 61-46 loss to the Connecticut College Camels in non-conference women's basketball action at John P. Brissette Court on Thursday evening.
The Lancers fall to 5-3 with the defeat, while the Camels stay perfect on the season, improving to 6-0.
Worcester State kept pace to start, as the Camels led 9-8 after one. Neither team could get much offense going in the quarter, shooting a combined 23.5 percent from the floor.
The Lancers took a 16-14 lead early in the second quarter on a Brittany Herring (West Brookfield, Mass.) lay up. Herring had four points and three rebounds for the hosts in the first half.
The Camels quickly responded by going on a 10-0 run to take a 24-16 lead. Senior Kate Surprenant (Pelham, N.H.) stopped the bleeding by hitting a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to eight, but eight first half turnovers allowed Connecticut College to take a 29-20 lead in the first half.
Surprenant led the Lancers with eight first half points, while Sami Ashton (Clinton, Conn.) led the Camels with nine points on 4-for-10 shooting.
Ashton led a strong four minutes for the Camels to start the second half, giving Connecticut College a 45-25 lead and forcing the Lancers to call a timeout. The Lancers went on a 8-1 run to close out the quarter. The Camels led 46-33 after three.
Senior Kaitlyn Berkel (Waterford, Conn.) led the Lancers with eight second half points. She finished with 12 points and eight rebounds on the night. Surprenant led the Lancers by pouring in 14.
Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) made a strong return to the lineup after missing the season's first seven games, creating several scoring chances for the Lancers.
Worcester got within 10 in the fourth quarter, but couldn't get any closer than that as the Camels hung on for a 61-46 win.
Ashton controlled the contest with a game-high 20 points in the win. Senior Margaret Corcoran (Milton, Mass.) scored 11 points and grabbed six boards in the victory, while junior Dana Muckstadt (Dover, Mass.) finished with a solid night of eight points and eight boards for the Camels.
The Lancers next contest is on Monday, December 1 at Keene State, The Camels also play on Monday, traveling to FDU-Florham for a 2 p.m. start.
