Women's Basketball Slays Red Dragons

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team took down SUNY Oneonta 52-42 Friday evening in a non-conference matchup in the first round of the Vassar College Tip-Off Tournament.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 3-1 on the season. The Red Dragons drop to 1-1.

Freshman Charlotte MacMillan (Brunswick, Maine) led all players with six points in the opening quarter off the bench to help Worcester State jump in front 10-8 after one.

Senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) poured in five points in the second quarter to help Worcester State take a narrow 21-18 lead into the break. The teams combined to shoot just 26.5 percent from the floor (13-for-49) in the opening half as the defenses looked sharp.

Led by five more from Mosley, all five Worcester State starters scored points in the third to give the Lancers a 37-30 headed to the fourth.

The Lancer lead was steady throughout the fourth quarter, but Worcester State all but sealed the deal when junior Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) drained a three with just over two minutes remaining to put her team ahead 50-39.

Mosley finished as the game's leading scorer with 16 points in the contest. The senior finished just shy of a triple-double, with nine steals and eight rebounds. Sophomore Sarah Blomgren (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored 10 points of her own, all coming on a perfect 10-for-10 night at the charity stripe.

Worcester State advances to face the hosts from Vassar College in the championship of the tournament tomorrow afternoon. Tip-off between the Lancers and Brewers is set for 3 p.m. on Saturday.
