Women's Hoops Drops Tight Non-Conference Contest

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team dropped a narrow 45-43 decision to Western New England University Tuesday evening at the Alumni Healthy Living Center.

With the loss, Worcester State moves to .500 on the season at 3-3.

The teams both had their strongest offensive quarter in the first, as the Lancers outscored the Golden Bears 20-15. Senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) scored 11 points on 5-for-5 shooting in the opening quarter to help the Lancers to the early advantage.

Sophomore Sarah Blomgren (Lunenberg, Mass.) scored five points in the second quarter to lead all players in the low-scoring period. The Lancers outscored the Golden Bears 9-8 in the period to take a 29-23 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was all Western New England, as the Golden Bears outscored Worcester State 13-5 to take a two-point lead to the fourth. Worcester State was held to just two field goals, including a Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) 3-pointer in the period.

The Golden Bears ran out to a nine-point lead in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter, but the Lancers went on a 9-0 run to tie the score. Western New England hit a jumper with 0.3 seconds left on the clock to win the game.

Sweeney led the Lancers with 13 points in the defeat, while Mosley finished with eight points.

Worcester State will be back in action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. tipoff against Keene State at John P. Brissette Court.
