Women's Basketball Prevails in High-Scoring Affair

STANDISH, Maine - The Worcester State University women's basketball team recorded its strongest offensive output of the season, defeating Saint Joseph's College (Me.) 87-81 in non-conference action at the Harold Alfond Center.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 7-4 overall on the season, while the Monks drop to 7-6.

Worcester State senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) scored a game-high eight points in the opening quarter, but Saint Joseph's led 19-16 at the end of the frame.

The Lancer offense kicked it into the next gear in the second quarter, outscoring the Monks 25-19 to head into the break ahead 41-38. Fifteen of Worcester State's 25 points came from the bench, led by junior Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) with eight.

Mosley, LeMay, and senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) all netted six points in the third as the Lancers extended their lead to 64-59 headed to the fourth.

Led by 10 points from LeMay, Worcester State closed it out in the fourth quarter, narrowly outscoring the hosts 23-22.

LeMay finished as the game's leading scorer with a career-best 26 points. Mosley scored 17 points for the Lancers, while freshman Elizabeth Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.) put home 12 off the bench. Worcester State's bench outscored its starters 45-42 in the contest, while the Lancers held a decided 40-28 rebound advantage over the Monks. The visitors had 19 offensive boards in the victory, and took advantage with 28 second chance points.

Worcester State will be back in action on Thursday, hosting Anna Maria for its Math Madness game at 12 p.m. on Thursday.
