Women's Hoops Solves Anna Maria in Math Madness Game

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's basketball team found the winning formula on Thursday afternoon, defeating Anna Maria College 65-57 in its annual Math Madness game at a packed John P. Brissette Court.

With the victory, Worcester State improves to 8-4, while Anna Maria drops to 4-10.

Greater than 500 school children were in attendance for the 12th annual Math Madness contest, representing May Street School and Tatnuck Magnet School, and ranging in grades kindergarten through eighth grade. Each child filled out a math packet during the course of the game with questions involving player statistics, court dimensions, and more.

Neither team grabbed a firm hold of the momentum in the first quarter, but the Lancers held a 20-16 lead after one. Senior Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) led the Lancers with eight points in the period, while Amber Wilson led all players with 10 points for Anna Maria.

Anna Maria divided Worcester State's lead in half in the second quarter, outscoring the Lancers 14-12 in the period to trail 32-30 heading to the break. Wilson scored 11 of Anna Maria's 14 points in the quarter, while senior Catherine Sweeney (Lowell, Mass.) led Worcester State with five.

The AMCats again outscored Worcester State in the third quarter, taking the lead by a fraction at 44-43 headed to the final 10 minutes. The Lancers held Wilson, Anna Maria's biggest difference-maker, in check in the quarter with just five points, but senior Sierra Johnson stepped up with six points of her own.

Worcester State looked exponentially stronger in the fourth to reclaim the lead and escape with the 65-57 win. Worcester State put 22 points through the cylinder in the period, with Mosley, freshman Erin Gallella (Tewksbury, Mass.), and junior Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) all equaling a team-high five points. Sweeney was a huge plus for Worcester State on the boards in the quarter, tallying 10 of the Lancers' 15 rebounds.

Wilson was a key factor, and finished as the game's leading scorer, totaling nearly two-thirds of Anna Maria's points with 36. Mosley was Worcester State's leader with 15 points, while Sweeney and LeMay had equal totals of 11 points. Neither team deviated too far from the mean in the contest, as the game featured nine ties and seven lead changes.

Worcester State will look to stay on its upward slope when the Lancers open conference play against Westfield State on Tuesday at Brissette Court. Anna Maria will look to return to the win column when they take on Rivier on Wednesday.
