NORTH ADAMS, Mass.- The Worcester State University women's basketball team came back 68-64 to beat the MCLA Trailblazers in Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Amsler Campus Center Gym.
With the win, the Lancers advance to 15-8 overall, 6-4 in conference play. MCLA drops to 2-20 on the season and 0-11 in the MASCAC.
The Trailblazers had a strong showing in the first quarter where they held a lead until Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) made a layup giving the Lancers their first lead of the day. MCLA battled back and went into the locker room after the first period ahead of the Lancers, 15-13.
Erika Ryan (Clifton Park, NY) paced the Trailblazer offense in the first half with 11 points giving MCLA a 35-29 lead at the half. The Lancer offense went 7-15 in the second quarter with Mosley grabbing seven points. Colleen Cutting (Auburn, Mass.) nabbed four boards in the quarter to keep the Lancer defense in the fight.
Worcester State finally took control in the third quarter outscoring MCLA 26-13. Gigi LeMay (Grafton, Mass.) paced the Lancer defense with five rebounds giving Worcester State the help they needed to go up 55-48 at the end of the quarter. MCLA's Kylah Langston (East Hartford, Conn.) was crucial to the Trailblazer offense with her eight points in the quarter from letting Worcester State get too far out of reach.
MCLA was not about to go down without a fight. With five minutes to go Worcester State held a 65-54 lead over the Trailblazers, but MCLA went on a 10-1 run to put the Trailblazers within two at 66-64. Mosley headed to the line after MCLA was forced to foul and drained her free throws securing the win for the Lancers.
Mosley grabbed 29 points, 19 of which came from second half action. LeMay grabbed a double-double in the conference matchup with 10 points and 14 rebounds.
Langston led the MCLA offensive effort with 18 points. Ryan ended with a double-double grabbing 13 points and 10 boards.
Next up, Worcester State hosts Fitchburg State on Wednesday night in their final regular season home game.
