Women's Lacrosse Posts 13-11 Victory Over Eastern Connecticut

Hilton Head, SC --- Sophomore Kaila Chase (Northbridge, MA) tallied five points and senior Vicki O'Brien (Canton, MA) added a hat-trick with one assist to help pace Worcester State to a 13-11 victory over Eastern Connecticut in their southern trip opener on Wednesday morning.

Chase registered a trio of markers and a pair of assists while classmate Jackie Connors (Ashland, MA) added three goals and one assist in the victory for the Lancers who improved to 3-0 with the win.

The Warriors (1-5) were propelled by freshman Paige Schneider (E. Lyme, CT) and senior Ashley Wolk (Barrington, RI) both shared the team lead with four tallies each.

With the score 5-5 at the intermission, the Blue and Gold embarked on a 5-1 run to start off the second frame and take over the 10-6 advantage. Chase potted a marker just 46 ticks into the stanza before O'Brien had a hand in three of the next four goals with two of her own in the spurt.

Eastern Connecticut responded with a 5-0 surge over the next 15 minutes and held their first edge of the final period (11-10). Schneider and Wolk were factors hitting home every score in the skien.

Freshman Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, MA) Worcester State responded in a big way by equalizing the contest at 9:40 followed by the eventual game-winner with 5:03 on the clock by first-year teammate Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, MA) off a dish by Connors.

Connors helped give the Lancers some insurance with 3:14 left for the contests final score.

With WSU nursing the early 3-2 edge 11 minutes into the contest, senior Erin Conn (Moriches, NY) equalized the score for the Warriors at 16:30. After Chase replied with a marker 28 seconds later, Eastern Connecticut came right back and made the contest 4-4 with a sophomore Tess Mraz (Fairfield, CT) tally.

Junior Angela Grassetti (Agawam, MA) gave the Lancers a 5-4 lead, but ECSU had the final possession and Schneider scored for her team with 0:07 on the board for 5-5 score at the break.

Sutherland and Connors helped combine for eight ground balls and six draws to help lead Worcester State in the transition game. Freshman keeper Lea Robichaud (Holden, MA) collected nine stops while picking up a trio of ground balls between the pipes.

The Lancers also held the slim 21-20 margin in shots on goal.

WSU takes on FDU-Florham on Friday at 10 AM to complete their southern trip to Hilton Head.
