Chase, Connors Pace Women's Lacrosse In 13-7 Victory Over Colby-Sawyer

 

Worcester, MA --- Junior Kaila Chase (Northbridge, MA) and classmate Jackie Connors (Ashland, MA) combined for nine goals to help pace Worcester State to a 13-7 triumph over Colby-Sawyer in non-conference women's lacrosse action this afternoon at Coughlin Field.

With the win the Lancers improve to 3-0 overall while the Chargers (0-1) dropped their season opening matchup.

Chase led the charge with a six career-best goals while Connors netted four goals with two assists. Sophomore Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, MA) added one goal and two helpers.

Sophomore Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, MA) paced the hosts on the back line with six ground balls, four draw controls and three forced miscues as Connors picked up a trifecta of ground balls and she recorded a pair of draws.

Colby-Sawyer was propelled by freshman Nicole Lavigne (Berlin, VT) who registered two goals and she added a game-best seven draws. Senior Alyssia Janak (Bourne, MA) notched one marker and two assists.

Four different players found the back of the cage as senior Carly Baker (Beverly, MA) ended the run to help the visitors open up a 4-1 advantage with 21:36 left in the opening frame.

But the Lancers answered with a 6-1 spurt of their own to close out the frame. Chase ignited the surge and potted a second goal at the 6:01 mark before senior Angela Grassetti (Feeding Hills, MA) put the Lancers up 7-5 at the intermission.

Connors notched three consecutive tallies and assisted Chase on a fourth to put the Blue and Gold up 11-5 over the first 13 minutes of the second stanza.

Chase had two more goals down the stretch which sealed up the win for the hosts.

Sophomore Lea Robichaud (Holden, MA) recorded six stops in the victory as she improved to 3-0 on the campaign. Sophomore Meghan Castellano (Wallingford, CT) collected 17 shots on net in the setback.

The Lancers led in shots (32-16), ground balls (20-11) while the Chargers controlled the draw (12-10 – 8-5 in first half).

With an assist on the day for seven points, it marked a new career high in the category for Chase.

Worcester State will start a two game stretch in Clearwater, Florida starting with Hope on Tuesday at 11 AM. Colby-Sawyer plays another MASCAC opponent this Thursday in Fitchburg State on the road.
