Women's Lacrosse Scores 14-10 Road Win Over Framingham State

 

Framingham, MA --- Sophomore Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, MA) potted five tallies and junior Kaila Chase (Northbridge, MA) registered a hat-trick as both helped lead Worcester State to a 14-10 triumph over Framingham State in MASCAC women's lacrosse action this afternoon at the Maple Street Field.

In the victory, the Lancers up their record to 9-2 while the Rams fall to 7-3 in the setback. Both squads now sport identical 2-1 records in MACAC action.

Senior Angela Grassetti (Feeding Hills, MA) was a standout on defense finishing with game highs of five ground balls and five draw controls to go with three caused turnovers. Sophomore Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, MA) also picked up a trio of ground balls.

Framingham State was paced by junior Stephanie Leonard (Framingham, MA) who registered four goals and two assists, and senior Zoe Reilly (Boyertown, PA) did a little bit of everything with three markers, four ground balls, four draws and three forced miscues.

The Rams took over the early 3-1 advantage on goals by Leonard, Reilly and freshman Morghan Cassella (Lowell, MA) at the 24:44 mark. Worcester State, however, responded with two quick goals by junior Jackie Connors (Ashland, MA) and Grassetti to tie up the score 3-3.

The two squads then went goal for goal over the next 15 minutes as the final tie occurred at 7-7 following a Chase tally with 7:19 on the clock.

WSU seized control of the period as Chase, Martin and senior Molly Kilday (Westford, MA) found the back of the net to give the Lancers the 10-7 advantage at the intermission.

In the second period, Leonard helped Rams get within two points in a duo of occasions including at the 22:30 mark (11-9) and again with 13:21 remaining in regulation (12-10). 

But freshman Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, MA) and Chase gave the visitors the cushion they needed to earn the hard-fought victory. Sophomore Lea Robichaud (Holden, MA) also stopped a pair bids on net in the waning moments of the game.

Robichaud (9-2) collected nine saves in the win while junior Alysha Cericola (Waltham, MA) rejected nine attempts between the pipes for Framingham State. Cericola's record dropped to 5-3 in the setback.

Ground balls were even (17-17) while the Lancers dominated draws (17-9) and led in total shots (29-22).

Both squads will play MASCAC opponents on the road this Tuesday. Worcester State takes on MCLA at 4 o'clock while the Rams take the trip to Fitchburg State in a 7 PM meeting.
