Connors Sets Career Assist Mark In Women's Lacrosse Victory Over Mass Maritime

 

Buzzards Bay, MA --- Junior Jackie Connors (Ashland, MA) finished with four goals, five draws and three ground balls as she helped pace Worcester State to a 17-9 triumph over Mass Maritime in MASCAC women's lacrosse action at the Clean Harbors Stadium.

In the victory, the Lancers (12-4) maintain their hold on second place with a 5-1 record while the Buccaneers fall to 5-8 and 1-5 in conference action.

Junior Kaila Chase (Northbridge, MA) registered a hat-trick with a trio of ground balls and two forced miscues while senior Molly Kilday (Westford, MA), classmate Jackie Lawlor (Westford, MA), sophomore Alaina Martin (E. Longmeadow, MA), and freshman Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, MA) all potted two markers each.

Sophomore Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, MA), junior Katelyn Murphy (Billerica, MA) and senior Angela Grassetti (Feeding Hills, MA) all finished with three ground balls as Grassetti came away with a game-best six ground balls. Sutherland logged four draws in the stat sheet and Murphy caused a pair of turnovers.

Freshman Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, CT) led Mass Maritime with four goals and one assist while junior Molly Smith (Westwood, MA) deposited three markers.  Sophomore Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, MA) ad a team-high four draws and sophomore Kianna Carpenter (Sagamore Beach, MA) picked up five ground balls.

With 15:46 remaining in the opening frame, Connors dished out her 90th career assist to Lawlor for the 4-3 advantage the Lancers never relinquished. It ignited a 5-2 outburst which gave the visitors an 8-5 margin at the intermission.

To begin the second stanza, Chase and Connors both found the back of the net twice in a 6-2 run to help put Worcester State ahead, 14-7, around the midway point.

Play was even for the remainder of the frame as Little and freshman Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, MA) found the back of the net for the final score.  

Connors eclipsed the previous career mark that had been established by former standout Shannon Feeley (2006-09).

Sophomore Lea Robichaud (Holden, MA) earned the victory to improve to 12-3 on the campaign in 51:24 minutes of action. She stopped three shots between the pipes while classmate Krissy Pessa (Walpole, MA) collected one save.

Freshman Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, MA) turned aside 15 shots in the defeat while she fell to 4-6 in the loss.

Worcester State led in shots on net (32-13), ground balls (27-26) and draws (22-6).

Both squads close out their regular season slates with MASCAC games on Saturday. The Lancers entertain Bridgewater State in a 1 PM faceoff while Mass Maritime heads up to Fitchburg State for a 6 o'clock draw.
