Women’s Lacrosse Falls to Westfield State 17-9

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Westfield State University's Sydney Lambert (Hanover, Mass.)  scored four goals and added a pair of assists to lead the Owls to a 17-9 victory over Worcester State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) game at Alumni Field on Friday night.



With the win, the Owls improve to 10-4 on the year and remain unbeaten in the MASCAC at 5-0, while the Lancers fall to 5-9 and 2-3 in the league. 

 

Westfield State rattled off six straight goals to open the game, taking a 6-0 lead on Lambert's free position shot with 13:30 left in the first half.

 

The two teams traded goals for the remainder of the half as Worcester cut the lead to 6-1 as Sarah Cohan (Lowell, Mass.) scored on a feed from Angelina Sutherland (Tyngsboro, Mass.)  with 10:22 left in the frame.  Alaina Martin's (E. Longmeadow, Mass.)  goal with 33 seconds left in the half trimmed the Owls' lead to 10-4 at the intermission.

 

The Lancers tallied the first two goals of the second half, with Sutherland's marker with 24:05 left cut the lead to 10-6, but Westfield responded with the next four goals in succession, including a pair by Elizabeth Navoni (Mansfield, Mass.), the last of which she scooped into the net off of bouncing ball after an errant pass that gave the Owls a 14-6 lead with 18:48 to play.

 

Lambert's six points led the Owls in the scoring column, with Navoni adding three goals.  Nine different Owls scored goals and 12 Owls players recorded at least one point.  Maria Woodall (Norfolk, Mass.) started in goal and made three saves in the first half, with senior Alanah Melanson (Chelmsford, Mass.) stopping eight shots in the second half.

 

Worcester State was paced by three goals and five assists from Sutherland, Martin and Mackenzie Little (Marlborough, Mass.)  each added a pair of goals.  Lancers' goalkeeper Krissy Pessa (Walpole, Mass.) made 12 saves in the loss. 

 

Westfield had a 38-26 advantage in total shots, and forced Worcester into 23 turnovers compared to 11 for the Owls.


Westfield State will host MCLA on Wednesday, April 26th in a conference game at 7:00 p.m.  Worcester State will next host Fitchburg State on April 26th in a conference game starting at 7:00 p.m.
