Women’s Lacrosse Opens Florida Play with 16-14 Win over Western New England

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – Worcester State University's senior duo of Alexis Vecchiarelli (Agawam, Mass.) and Mackenzie Little (Marlboro, Mass.) tallied 10 of the Lancers' 16 goals to guide the Blue and Gold to a 16-14 win over Western New England in their first Florida game on Monday.

1ST HALF

Vecchiarelli and Little each had unassisted goals to begin, and then sophomore Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.) scored on a free position shot for the 3-0 Lancer lead. Western New England came back with a goal in the 5th minute to break the nil Golden Bears score. Worcester State, however, responded with three consecutive goals from Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.), Austin, and Kylie Farrell (Sutton, Mass.) for a 6-1 gain. The Golden Bears came back with two consecutive goals, but Worcester State responded with two of their own on free position attempts for the 8-3 score. The Golden Bears ended the half with a 4-1 run to bring the score to 9-7 heading into the intermission.

 

2ND HALF

Little opened the second half with a goal on a helper from Austin. Western New England closed the gap with a  4-1 run to knot the score at 11-11 with 17:54 remaining in the game. Kaylee Krajewski (Holyoke, Mass.) began a 4-1 Lancer run to put Worcester up 15-12. Western New England battled back with two back-to-back goals, but the game concluded with a goal from Little with 17 seconds remaining to settle the score at 16-14.

 

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Little and Vecchairelli finished the game with five goals and an assist apiece for six total points each.
  • Austin tallied two goals for the Blue and Gold and also led in the ground ball category with six.
  • Little posted a game-high 12 draws in the win.
  • Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) earned her second consecutive win in goal in a 6-save performance.
  • The Lancers held the advantage in shots (27-21), draw controls (21-7) and ground balls (24-8).

 

UP NEXT

The women's lacrosse team will play their second and final game in Florida on Wednesday (Mar. 21) against Calvin at 10 a.m. before returning home to matchup against Western Connecticut State University on Saturday (Mar. 24).
