Women's Lacrosse Doubles Up Whitman in Season Opener

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Worcester State University women's lacrosse team outscored Whitman College 8-1 in the first half en route to a 14-7 victory over the Blues to open its season Sunday at Colorado College's Washburn Field.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 1-0 on the season, while the Blues drop to 1-1 with their first loss of the season.

Freshman Madison Brennan (Pomfret, Conn.) opened the scoring for Worcester State just a 1:01 into the contest, and the Lancers were off and running from there. Brennan, sophomore Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.), and freshman Ann Maher (Mansfield, Mass.) all scored a pair of first half goals, with single tallies from Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) and Kaylee Krajewski (Chicopee, Mass.), as the Lancers opened the game on an 8-0 run before Whitman finally scored with under a minute remaining in the half to cut it to 8-1.

The second half was played much more evenly than the first, but the damage was already done as the Lancers were able to secure the victory. Austin, who finished the game with four goals and an assist, completed her hat trick just under two minutes into the second half to stretch the Lancer lead to 9-1, before sophomore Abby Magnuson (Ellington, Conn.) scored her first of two goals on the afternoon just a minute and a half later.

Sophomores Kylie Hill (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Taylor Dube (Milford, Mass.) each netted their first goals of the 2019 season in the second half to lift the Lancers over the Blues.

In goal, Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) picked up the victory with a four-save effort, all coming in a stellar first half for the Lancers.

The Lancers will be back in action on Wednesday for a battle against nationally-ranked Colorado College, starting at 5 p.m. Eastern time.
