Hopkins Scores Six as Women's Lacrosse Cruises Past Corsairs

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Junior midfielder Rachel Hopkins (Chelmsford, Mass.) became the first Lancer in two seasons to score six goals in a game Tuesday night as the Worcester State University women's lacrosse team took care of UMass Dartmouth 17-4 in non-conference action at Cressy Field.

With the win, Worcester State claims its fifth consecutive win and improves to 7-2 overall on the season. The Corsairs drop to 4-7 on the year.

Hopkins is the first Lancer to record at least six goals in a game since Mackenzie Little scored seven in a win over Colby-Sawyer on April 19, 2017.

The visiting Lancers netted the first seven goals of the contest, including a hat trick from Hopkins and a pair of tallies from junior Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.), but the host Corsairs responded with three unanswered markers to close back to within four on senior Brooke Martel's (Haverhill, Mass.) goal with 13:14 to play in the half. Worcester State collected five of the final six first half tallies to take a 12-4 advantage at the break, and the visitors scored all five goals after intermission to account for the final margin.

Freshman Madison Brennan (Pomfret, Conn.) chipped with four goals and an assist for five points in the win for the Lancers, who received three total points from Austin along with two tallies off the stick of sophomore Abby Magnuson (Ellington, Conn.). Sophomores Kylie Hill (Lunenburg, Mass.) and Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.), along with freshman Abby Lauzon (Lakeville, Mass.), also scored in the triumph for Worcester State, which received two assists from freshman Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) and a single helper off the stick of freshman Ann Maher (Mansfield, Mass.).

Junior Sam Muir (Sturbridge, Mass.) netted a pair of goals and an assist for three points in the setback for UMass Dartmouth, which received the first career tally off the stick of freshman Carrianne Fortier (Oxford, Mass.). Sophomore Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) made four saves to pick up her seventh win of the season in goal for Worcester State, while senior Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) made 19 stops in the setback for the Corsairs. The Lancers held a 43-11 advantage in total shots (36-8 on goal) and a 16-7 edge in draw controls for the contest.

UMass Dartmouth heads to Plymouth, N.H. on Saturday morning to take on Plymouth State in a Little East Conference clash beginning at 11:30 am, while Worcester State hosts Bridgewater State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field that begins at noon.
