Women's Lacrosse Records First Shutout in 10 Years in Victory over MCLA

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - For the first time since 2009, the Worcester State University women's lacrosse team recorded a shutout on Tuesday evening, defeating MCLA 10-0 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Shewcraft Field.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 8-3 overall this season, and 3-1 in the conference.

Worcester State's shutout is the first since April 25, 2009, when the Lancers defeated Elms College 21-0. It is only the second shutout in program history.

Eight different Lancers found the back of the net for Worcester in the victory, with sophomores Abby Magnuson (Ellington, Conn.) and Ashley Perugini (Watertown, Conn.) leading the way with a pair each.

A free-position goal from freshman Madison Brennan (Pomfret, Conn.) got the Lancers going less than a minute into the game, and the team would keep rolling with seven goals in the game's opening 10 and a half minutes to jump out to a big early lead. Sophomore Kylie Hill (Lunenburg, Mass.) scored with just under six minutes remaining in the half to help her team to an 8-0 lead at the break.

Freshman Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) and Perugini added second half tallies for Worcester State to give the game its final score of 10-0.

Also adding tallies for Worcester State were junior Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.), sophomore Taylor Dube (Milford, Mass.), and freshman Ann Maher (Mansfield, Mass.).

Sophomore Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) got credited with the shutout in goal for Worcester State. The Lancer defense, anchored by junior Sarah Cohan (Lowell, Mass.), sophomores Lauren Arbec (Fairhaven, Mass.) and Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.), and freshmen Lily Jarvis (Marshfield, Mass.) and Abby Lauzon (Lakeville, Mass.), was stellar, holding the Trailblazers to zero shots on goal and just three shots total.

Worcester State returns to action on Saturday with a road trip to Westfield State in MASCAC action, slated for 12 p.m.
