Women's Lacrosse Bested by Westfield State

WESTFIELD, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's lacrosse team fell to Westfield State University 9-4 Saturday afternoon in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Alumni Field.

With the loss, Worcester State drops to 8-4 overall on the season and 3-2 in the MASCAC.

The teams traded goals in the opening 15 minutes of the contest, as a pair of goals from freshman Madison Brennan (Pomfret, Conn.) had the Lancers tied 2-2 with the Owls at the 14:32 mark of the first half.

The tallies, however, would be the end of Worcester State's offense for nearly the remainder of the game. Westfield State reeled off the game's next seven goals to take a commanding 9-2 lead midway through the second half. Worcester's Ann Maher (Mansfield, Mass.) and Kelly Austin (Brimfield, Mass.) scored in the final 6:05 of the game to cut into the deficit, but the Lancers were unable to complete the comeback.

Maher and sophomore Coley Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) were each credited with assists in the loss. Sophomore Lauren Arbec (Fairhaven, Mass.) led Worcester State's defensive effort in the contest, recording team-highs with seven ground balls and three caused turnovers. In net, Chloe O'Brien (Sturbridge, Mass.) came up with a season-best 13 saves despite the loss.

Worcester State will return to action on Monday to play a rescheduled game against Gordon College at 4 p.m. at Coughlin Field.
