Women's Soccer, Bridgewater State Tie In Double Overtime, 2-2

Bridgewater, MA --- Worcester State and Bridgewater State drew in double overtime, 2-2, in MASCAC women's soccer action this afternoon.

With the tie, the Lancers move to 5-4-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the MASCAC while the Bears are 4-4-2 and 1-0-2 in conference play.

The hosts struck first just 2:58 off the clock in the opening frame. Junior Erica Jonasson (Wrentham, MA) potted her team-best eighth marker of the season by taking a nice pass from the left side of the field from classmate Emily Lane (Parsonfield, ME) and blasted one to the right corner of the net.

Worcester State answered 20 minutes later on an unassisted tally by sophomore Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA). Macomber hit a rocket from 20-yards out, which was just of the reach of sophomore Marrissa Yowell's (Ashland, MA) for her squad-best sixth goal of the season.

The score remained the same until the 71st minute when the Blue and Gold went up 2-1.

Senior Laura Maunsell (Medford, MA) deposited a header into the right corner following a great feed by freshman Kendal Bergenholtz (Grafton, MA). Maunsell now has three goals on the year for the Lancers.

But the Bears came right back and equalized the score 2-2 in the 80th minute. Sophomore Mackenzie Hatfield (Whitman, MA) hit home the unassisted marker for her fifth tally of the campaign on a breakaway goal.

Hatfield nearly ended the contest in regulation when she had a trio of great looks in the waning moments including one that rang the crossbar with under two minutes to play after she followed through on her own corner kick.

In the extra session, the Lancers couldn't convert a corner opportunity in overtime when senior Makayla Moran's (Leominster, MA) bid was wide of the net and in the second session, Yowell made a great play on an attempt put in play by senior Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA).

Bridgewater State had their chances in extra time as well. Early in the first 10 minute stanza, Lane was open in front of the net and again in the final 10 minute period, junior Lauren Bandoian (Medford, MA) had a good look, but both shots were denied by WSU sophomore keeper Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA).

The Bears held the slim edge in shots (18-15), shots on goal (12-8) and corner kicks (7-5).

Yowell collected six saves for the Bears while Witkowski turned aside 10 shots for the visitors.

Worcester State hosts Keene State on Wednesday at 7 PM while Bridgewater State takes the week off before visiting Fitchburg State next Saturday in a noontime affair.
