Westfield State Downs Women's Soccer 2-1 In Overtime Thriller

Westfield, MA --- Westfield State junior Amanda Grant (Westfield, MA) netted both goals for the Owls, including the game winner in overtime to knock off Worcester State 2-1 in MASCAC women's soccer action this afternoon at Alumni Field.

With the win Westfield State runs their record to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in conference play while Worcester State drops to 7-6-2 overall and 2-2-2 in league action.

Grant was taken down in the penalty box six minutes into the extra frame setting up the golden goal opportunity.  She calmly deposited the ball in the lower left corner lifting the Owls to their fifth consecutive win.

The Lancers staked themselves the early 1-0 advantage in the seventh minute when junior Alyssa Sawyer (W. Springfield, MA) gathered a misplaced clearance attempt and dished the ball to classmate Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT). Archer sent a laser on net from the top of the box to beat the keeper bottom left.

Westfield State nearly grabbed the equalizer when junior Sarah Sypek (Westhampton, MA) sent the ball on goal off a corner kick in the 26th minute, but Sawyer came up huge with a team save allowing the Blue and Gold to take the 1-0 edge into the intermission.

Grant leveled the score early in the second stanza when, instead of connecting with a teammate, her cross beat the goalie on the far side of the net for the 1-1 score in the 48th minute.

Westfield State senior net-minder Jess Habif (Natick, MA) registered one save in the victory while her counterpart freshman Vanessa O'Donnell (Worcester, MA) stopped five balls in the setback.

The Owls outshot Worcester State, 26-5 (8-2 on goal) and held the slim 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

Both Squads return to action on Wednesday night as the Lancers return home to take on UMass-Dartmouth at 7 PM and Westfield State remains home to face-off with Keene State at 7 PM.
