Women's Soccer Tops MASCAC With 17 All-Academic Team Honorees

 

Westfield, MA --- Worcester State women's soccer seniors Kelsey Cartwright (Bridgewater, MA), Gaby Gonet (Agawam, MA) and Laura Maunsell (Medford, MA) highlighted a conference-best 17 selections on the MASCAC Fall All-Academic Team as announced by conference publicist Emily Diekelmann.

In addition to the trio above other selections included juniors Shelby Archer (Dayville, CT), Margo Clifford (Attleboro, MA), Cassie Giardina (Pittsfield, MA), Sarina Lathrop (Hopedale, MA), sophomore's Mackenzie Foye (Ludlow, MA), Kiley Hardy (Pepperell, MA), Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA), Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA).

The freshman selections included teammates Kendal Bergenholtz (Grafton, MA), Courtney Kelly (Templeton, MA), Vanessa O'Donnell (Worcester, MA/Burncoat), Mairead Schofield (Leominster, MA) and Beth Spinazzola (Westford, MA).

For Cartwright, Gonet and Maunsell, the trio has been recognized in all four seasons with all-academic laurels while Hassett received the nod for the third time in four years. Clifford, Foye, Giardina and Witkowski have been honored for the second time during their respective careers.

In addition to claiming the most women's soccer student-athletes in the conference, the Blue and Gold finished with a stellar 3.15 grade point average.

To earn a spot on the MASCAC All-Academic Team, a student-athlete must have achieved a 3.20 cumulative or semester-based GPA during their season of competition.

Under the direction of sixth-year head coach Kevin Cumberbatch, the Lancers posted their tenth consecutive winning season and upset top-seeded Framingham State in the MASCAC Tournament semifinals before falling in the championship game against Bridgewater State.

Among institutions in the MASCAC, Worcester State had 78 overall selections on the league fall academic honor roll for the third highest total in the conference. The total number of WSU student-athletes also marked the highest since the league began listing its all-academic honor roll on a season-by-season basis during the 2009-10 academic year.
