Evans, Lathrop Pace Women's Soccer In 2-1 Victory Over Plymouth State

Worcester, MA --- Senior teammates Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, MA) and Sarina Lathrop (Hopedale, MA) each registered one goal apiece to help Worcester State defeat Plymouth State this evening in non-conference women's soccer action at Coughlin Field

With the victory the Lancers (6-1) run their streak to five straight games while the Panthers fall to 1-4 in the setback.

Evans netted the contests first marker in the 20th minute on a long ball from the midfield by junior Alicia Macomber (Stoughton, MA). Evans then broke for the net on the right side of the box and finished her second goal of the campaign to the right corner.

In the opening frame, sophomore goalie Annaliese Schmidt (New Market, NH) single handedly kept her squad in the game as she recorded 12 stops in the stanza and junior Lea Swanson (Atkinson, NH) had a key team stop in the 26th minute to keep the score right where it was.

The Blue and Gold, however, recorded their second goal just 54 ticks into the second period when Lathrop received a long cross from Macomber on the right side of the net. Lathrop then fired a missile past the keeper to the top right corner for her second of the year.

Plymouth State gathered some momentum and cut the lead in half nearly two minutes later by making it a 2-1 contest when freshman Caitlin Johnson (Newington, CT) lofted a long ball from the 30-yardline right over the head of the goaltender for her first collegiate tally with some help by classmate Kaity Morency (Pembroke, NH).

Schmidt again came up in the clutch by turning aside several Worcester State chances late in the game.

Macomber was alone on a breakaway with 13 minutes left in regulation, but Schmidt dove to her left to prevent any further damage.

The Panthers best opportunity to even the score came in the 69th minute as freshman Adrianna Kippenberger (Wilmington, MA) tried to take advantage of a free kick at the top of the box, but her attempt sailed high above the net.

Schmidt finished with 17 saves between the pipes while sophomore Vanessa O'Donnell (Worcester, MA/Doherty) recorded her first victory of the campaign with two second half saves.

Worcester State actually outshot their opponents 31-5 (10-5 in second half) as each had one corner kick each.

Both squads return their attention to their respective conference schedules on the road this Saturday. Worcester State heads to Framingham State in a key matchup at noon. Plymouth State travels to Southern Maine for a 1 PM kickoff.
