Lathrop Tallies As Women's Soccer Draws With UMass Dartmouth, 1-1

N. Dartmouth, MA --- Worcester State and UMass Dartmouth drew to a 1-1 double overtime tie this evening  in non-conference women's soccer action at Cressy Field.

The Corsairs (8-8-1) broke the scoreless contest when senior Shelby Freidland (New Bedford, MA) finished a great feed from sophomore Lucy Jensen (Boxboro, MA) , and beat the keeper to the ball to put the hosts on top by one in the 27th minute.

The Lancers (11-3-1) tied up the score just 1:51 into the second period on an unassisted tally by senior Sarina Lathrop (Hopedale, MA). UMD tried to clear a ball, but Lathrop was right there to deflect the ball off of her right foot and she finished on the top left side of the box for her fourth of the campaign.

UMass Dartmouth senior Maura Goncalves (Dartmouth, MA) nearly ended the contest in the waning moments, however, the effort was stopped short by sophomore netminder Vanessa O'Donnell (Worcester, MA/Doherty).

The best chance for either squad came in the second extra session when WSU senior Kaleigh Evans (Saugus, MA) was alone at the top of the box, however, her wide open bid for the match clincher was just to the left of the net.

O'Donnell turned aside three shots in 65 scoreless minutes of junior Jillian Witkowski (Leicester, MA) as her record moved to 1-0-1 in the draw. UMD sophmore Nikki Butts (Milford, MA) made nine saves in the tie as she went to 4-0-1 overall.

After the Corsairs led in shots, 14-4, in the opening frame, the total was as even as the score (15-15) the rest of the way. The hosts also led in corners (8-0).

Both squads close out their regular season against conference opponents on the road. Worcester State takes on Fitchburg State to try to clinch the MASCAC Regular Season title at 10 AM and UMass Dartmouth heads to Western Connecticut for a 5 o'clock matchup.
