Women's Soccer Shut Out by WPI

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's soccer team suffered its second consecutive loss on Tuesday, falling to its neighbors from WPI 4-0 in non-conference action at Alumni Stadium.

With the loss, the Lancers fall to 1-4 on the season, while the Engineers stay perfect at 5-0.

WPI sophomore Leah Beauton (Colchester, Conn) and junior Kristen McCrea (Weymouth, Mass.) scored 44 seconds apart early in the first half to give the hosts a 2-0 lead in just the sixth minute. Sophomore Sofia Orrico (Bethel, Conn.) sent a through ball to Beauton for the initial tally at 4:28. McCrea then doubled the Engineers score with help from senior Juliana Cabello (Smithtown, N.Y.) at 5:12.

Defensively, senior Gabriela Hoops (Stonington, Conn.) had to make a diving stop on junior Skylar Alves' (Ashburnham, Mass.) free kick in the 35th minute. Moments later, the Lancers had another good opportunity off the foot of junior Christina Spinos (Wilmington, Mass.) following a corner, but again the Lancers were stymied and could not find the back of the net.

McCrea struck again in the 43rd minute from the left side to make it 3-0 heading into the intermission. Sophomore Lauren Kaija (Reading, Vt.), meanwhile, picked up her first point of the season.

Early in the second half, McCrea completed her hat trick, ripping a shot from distance into the top right corner of the net to seal the 4-0 final.

Sophomore Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) was credited with the loss on the afternoon, despite making six saves. Hoops and junior Mandy St. Germain (Worcester, Mass.) combined for the shut out for the Engineers, with five saves between the pair.

Next up for the Lancers, they will look to return to the win column when they take on Becker College at home on Thursday evening at Coughlin Field.
