Women's Soccer Falls to Gordon in High-Scoring Affair

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University Lancers women's soccer team fell to the Gordon College Fighting Scots by a score of 5-2 on Tuesday at Coughlin Field.

The Lancers drop to 3-5 with the loss and the Scots improve their record to 4-3.

Gordon jumped out to a quick lead with a goal from senior Asha Steele (Bedford, N.H.) in the sixth minute. Senior Taemar Shearer (Hampden, Maine) brought the lead to 2-0 with her goal in the 19th minute.

The Lancers were able to answer back before the half, with a goal from junior Skylar Alves (Ashburnham, Mass.) in the 44th minute. The tally brought the halftime score to 2-1 with Gordon in the lead. After 45 minutes, the shot totals were close with Gordon recording nine and Worcester State at seven.

Steele and the Scots came out of halftime ready to go, scoring her second goal of the game in the first minute of the second half, giving the Scots a 3-1 lead.

Worcester State sophomore Maddie Fong (Norton, Mass.) responded with a goal of her own in the 58th minute to get the Lancers back within one goal.

Lexi Potter (South Glens Falls, N.Y.) of Gordon put the game out of reach for good with two goals in the second half. The first came in the 67th minute to put the Scots up 4-2. Her second goal of the game and eighth of the season came in the 81st minute to give the Scots a three-goal cushion.

Gordon freshmen Jenny Deckert (Gloucester, Mass.) recorded the win with her five save performance. Worcester State goalie Jill Zinkus (Grafton, Mass.) ended up with the loss despite her six saves.

The Lancers play next on Saturday, September 22 against Fitchburg State at home. Kickoff will be at 10 a.m. The Scots will travel to Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 3 p.m. for their next match.
