Women's Soccer Doubles Up Fitchburg State

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's soccer team defeated the Fitchburg State Falcons 4-2 on Saturday to secure a Homecoming Day victory in MASCAC action at Coughlin Field.

With the win, the Lancers move to 4-5 on the season (2-0 in the conference) and the Falcons fall to 2-4-1 (1-1 in conference).

Lancer sophomore Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) opened the scoring with a goal in the sixth minute. Gurlitz secured a rebound and sent a shot to the far post and past the Fitchburg State goalie.

Senior Jenna Martin (Salem, N.H.) added a second goal to the Worcester State lead with a header that found the back of the net. Senior Nikki DiPilla (Sterling, Mass.) recorded the assist after sending a corner kick into the box.

The Lancers went into halftime with a 2-0 lead after outshooting the Falcons 6-4 in the first 45 minutes.

Fitchburg State sophomore Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) scored two goals in the first ten minutes of the second half to even the score at 2-2. The first goal came from a free kick that she sent past the Worcester State keeper, and the second off a deflection in the 55th minute to tie the game.

Sophomore Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) put Worcester State back in the lead with a breakaway goal just two minutes later in the 57th minute. Maldonado dribbled past the Fitchburg defenders and snuck a shot by the Falcons' goalkeeper.

Worcester State sophomore Maddie Fong (Norton, Mass.) added onto the lead with a goal in the 63rd minute. DiPilla sent the ball into the box allowing Fong to control the ball and send a shot to the left post and past the Falcon goalie.

Lancer goalie Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) earned the win, recording four saves. Falcon goalkeeper Sarah Hemmings (Eastham, Mass.) ended up with the loss despite her four saves.

The Lancers are back in action on Saturday with a road matchup with Westfield State. Kickoff will be at 11 a.m. Fitchburg State will travel to New England College on Tuesday with the game starting at 7 p.m.
