Women's Soccer Blanks Salem State on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's soccer team defeated the Salem State Vikings by a score of 2-0 on Saturday at Coughlin Field in a Senior Day matchup.

The Lancers improve their record to 7-6 (5-0 in MASCAC). The Vikings fall to 3-8 (2-3 in MASCAC).

The first half was mostly uneventful. Each team had a few opportunities, but neither could find the back of the net. The score remained 0-0 after the first 45 minutes. The Lancers outshot the Vikings eight to seven, with each team putting two shots on goal.

A foul in the box set up the Lancers first goal of the game in the 58th minute. Maddie Fong (Norton, Mass.) took the penalty kick and sent it to the right and past the keeper's outstretched arms.

A transition opportunity led to goal number two for the Lancers in the 76th minute. Tayla O'Leary (Salem, Mass.) placed a cross over the Viking defenders, allowing Jill Anderson (Spencer, Mass.) to control it and send a shot past the Salem State goalie.

Worcester State keeper Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) earned the win, recording four saves in the effort. Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, Mass.) recorded the loss for Salem State, despite her six saves.

The Lancers will play next on Tuesday, October 16 at Western Connecticut State, kicking off at 6 p.m. The Vikings will head home to face off against Endicott on Monday, October 15 with the game starting at 7 p.m.
