Women's Soccer Bested by Western Connecticut

DANBURY, Conn. – The Worcester State University women's soccer team suffered a 3-1 loss to Western Connecticut State University Tuesday evening in non-conference action from the Westside Athletic Complex. Senior midfielder Lucy Daniels (Bethel, Conn.) tallied a goal and dished out an assist to lead the Colonials to the victory.

With the win, the Colonials improved to 11-6 overall, stretching their winning streak to nine games. The Lancers dropped to 7-7.

The hosts jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when Daniels found classmate Allison Oakley (Beekman, N.Y.) who netted her third goal of the season 8:02 into the game. The Lancers retaliated shortly before halftime when Skylar Alves (Ashburnham, Mass.) scored her third of the year, assisted by Jennah Kellie (Manchester, Conn.).

WestConn would regain the lead early in the second when first-year phenom Kaleigh Panek (Shelton, Conn.) took a pass from senior Aileen Maloney (Trumbull, Conn.) and tickled the twine with her team-leading 10th goal of the slate.

The Colonials would add an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when Daniels found the back of the net, unassisted.

Rookie goalkeeper Karly Martin (Bristol, Conn.) improved to 4-0, combining with sophomore Alexis Lainchbury (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) to record seven saves for WestConn. Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) fell to 6-4 and turned aside eight shots for the Lancers.

The Colonials return to action at Little East Conference nemesis UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. The Lancers return to the pitch on Saturday to face Framingham State.
