Women's Soccer Shuts Down Becker

LEICESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's soccer team earned its first win of the 2019 season Thursday night, shutting out Becker College 4-0 in non-conference action at Alumni Field.

Worcester State improves to 1-3-1 on the season with the victory, while Becker drops to 3-2-1.

The Lancers struck first when Worcester State freshman forward Haley Mignon (Tewksbury, Mass.) scored her second career goal in the 18th minute, assisted by senior midfielder Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.). The 1-0 lead for the visitors would hold up through the end of the first half.

With 30:24 left in the game, Worcester State junior midfielder Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) sent a blast over the keeper's head for her first goal of the season, assisted by freshman midfielder Haley Ferrin (North Attleboro, Mass.) as the Lancers went ahead 2-0.

In the 65th minute, the Lancers would strike again as Mignon sent a lob into the far side net with an assist to sophomore defender Apphia Donoghue (Rowley, Mass.) as Worcester State went ahead 3-0.

Freshman midfielder Haley Samara (Worcester, Mass.) scored her first career goal, assisted by junior defender Kass Liquori (Enfield, Conn.) to cap the Worcester State scoring in the 82nd minute.

Becker freshman goalkeeper Olivia Sherwood (Southington, Conn.), last week's New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week, continued her strong play of late by tallying 12 saves in net for the Hawks in 65:30. Sophomore goalkeeper Lyndsey Cobb-Wilkins (Elmira, N.Y.) posted four saves in relief. Sophomore goalkeeper Tori Socci (Blackstone, Mass.) picked up the shutout win for Worcester State, finishing with three stops.

Worcester State outshot Becker 34-4 with a 20-3 edge in shots on goals in the contest.

The Hawks are back on the field on Saturday when they travel to Curry College for an 11:00 a.m. game. The Lancers return to action on Tuesday night when they travel to Gordon College for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
