SALEM, Mass. - The Salem State Vikings and Worcester State Lancers played to a 2-2 draw in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action at Alumni Field on Saturday. Leading late, Salem State was called for a handball in the box. Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) converted the penalty with less than two minutes to go to force extra time. Both teams had opportunities to win the game but couldn't find the back of the net. The Vikings are now 2-5-1 on the season and 1-0-1 in the MASCAC. Worcester State is 3-4-2 on the year and 1-0-1 in the MASCAC.
The Lancers had the edge early, moving the ball up field and finding Haley Mignon (Tewksbury, Mass.), who got behind all of the defenders. Mignon took a clean shot, but it missed over the crossbar in the 27th minute.
The Vikings received a free-kick after Kass Liquori (Enfield, Conn.) committed a foul. Emily Boyle (Manchester, NH) took a shot off the free-kick from 30 yards out, but it was saved by goalkeeper Tori Socci (Blackstone, Mass.).
Both teams entered halftime scoreless. Worcester State finished the half with six shot attempts (three on target), while Salem State got off one shot attempt. The Vikings took two corners to the Lancers' one.
Worcester State took a 1-0 lead in the 54th minute when freshman Haley Ferrin (North Attleboro, Mass.) took a shot that got past goalie Rebecca Sabino (Peabody, Mass.).
Within the same minute, the Vikings charged down the field as Devyn Malatesta (Wilmington, Mass.) found Taylor Capozzi (Lynn, Mass.). Capozzi took a low shot that found the back of the net allowing Salem State to tie the game at 1-1.
In the 63rd minute, Katie Brown (Milford, Mass.) delivered a pass to Teagan Gilliss (Danvers, Mass.) on the right side of the field. Gilliss shot it low to the near post, giving the Vikings a 2-1 lead.
With the clock running out, Salem State got called for a handball in the box and Maldonado took the penalty. Maldonado easily tied it up at 2-2 to force extra time.
In the second half of extra time, Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.) took a powerful shot and Sabino made a desperation save to keep Salem State in the game.
For the game, the Lancers attempted 18 shots with 13 on target. The Vikings took eight shots and all of them were on target. Worcester State had eight corners while Salem State had five.
The Vikings' Sabino finished with 10 saves and two goals allowed. Socci saved six shots while conceding two goals.
Worcester State is back in action on Tuesday with a roadtrip to MIT. Kickoff from Cambridge is scheduled for 4 p.m.
