Women's Soccer Blanks UMass Dartmouth

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's soccer team secured a 2-0 victory over UMass Dartmouth in non-conference action Wednesday evening at Coughlin Field. The game was the 500th in the history of Worcester State women's soccer.

With the win, Worcester State improves to 7-7-2 on the season. UMass Dartmouth drops to 3-14-0.

Neither team found the back of the net in the opening half, despite the Lancers outshooting the Corsairs by a margin of 7-3.

Junior Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) finally broke the deadlock for Worcester State with a goal in the 76th minute, scoring her team-leading ninth goal of the season. A cross from the right wing from Madison Rotti (Rutland, Mass.) was headed down by a Corsair defender, but directly to the foot of Maldonado. The junior made no mistake on the play, lifting an arching shot over the Corsair keeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

Sophomore Leah Fitzgerald (Upton, Mass.) added her first collegiate goal on a breakaway with 20 seconds remaining to lock down Worcester State's victory.

Junior Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) got the shutout victory in net for the Lancers with eight saves, including six in the second half. UMass Dartmouth's Katherine Hubbard made four second half saves to be credited with the loss. Jaimee O'Brien made four saves without allowing a goal in 45 minutes in the first half.

Worcester State will conclude its regular season on Saturday, hosting Bridgewater State at Coughlin Field for Senior Day. UMass Dartmouth will close out its season the same day, taking on Castleton at 6 p.m.
