Women's Soccer Charges Past Bears on Senior Day

WORCESTER, Mass.- The Worcester State University women's soccer team defeated the Bridgewater State Bears 3-1 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon at Coughlin Field.

With the win the Lancers advance to 8-7-2 on the season and 5-1-1 in conference play. The Bears drop to 10-8-0 overall and 5-2-0 in conference play.

Prior to the game, Worcester State honored two seniors, Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.) and Christina Spinos (Wilmington, Mass.) in their final regular season home game at Coughlin Field.

Bridgewater State opened up scoring early in the first half when Emma Sanders (Seekonk, Mass.) chipped one past Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) three minutes into the game.

The Lancers quieted the Bears for the remainder of the first half though when a combined effort but the Lancers into the locker room up 3-1 at the half. LeBlanc took the ball down the left side and crossed it to Madison Rotti (Rutland, Mass.) who sent it into the top left corner of the net. Megan Gurlitz (Auburn, Mass.) sent a cross in to LeBlanc who hit the far post putting the Lancers ahead 2-1. The third goal of the half came from Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) who put the ball past the Bear's defense after a battle in front of the net.

The second half was a defensive battle between the two teams. Both teams saw opportunities in front of the net through the half. Goalies made some impressive stays to keep the stalemate and the defenses held strong to stop the ball.

Worcester State goalie, Spellman was awarded the win making five saves. The Bears goalie, Kellie Souza (Wilmington, Mass.) recorded the loss making four saves.

Worcester State will open the MASCAC tournament next week with their opponent to be determined.
