Women's Soccer Advances with 6-0 First Round Victory

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester State University women's soccer team advanced in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday afternoon with a 6-0 First Round win over Fitchburg State University at Coughlin Field.

With the win, Worcester State moves to 9-7-2 overall on the season, and advances to play Salem State Friday night at 7 p.m. in the MASCAC Semifinals. Fitchburg's season ends with a record of 5-14-0.

Worcester State opened the scoring in just the eighth minute when senior Tsara LeBlanc (Gardner, Mass.) scored her fifth goal of the season off an assist from freshman Haley Ferrin (North Attleboro, Mass.).

In the 24th minute, Worcester State extended its lead to two, when junior Ali Maldonado (Rutland, Mass.) netted her team-leading 11th goal of the season off a Christina Spinos (Wilmington, Mass.) throw-in. The Lancers carried the 2-0 lead into halftime, outshooting Fitchburg State 9-3 in the opening 45 minutes.

Eight and a half minutes into the second half, Worcester State's Maddie Fong (Norton, Mass.) put the hosts up by three on a free kick. Maldonado's second goal of the game pushed the advantage to 4-0, followed by the first collegiate goal from freshman Hailey Skowronski (Douglas, Mass.).

Freshman Becca Lashua (Gardner, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season for insurance in the 77th minute to secure the 6-0 final.

Ashley Spellman (Lancaster, Mass.) recorded the shutout in net with five saves for the Lancers. Falcon goalkeeper Sarah Hemmings made seven saves in the loss.
