Leicester, MA --- Senior classmates Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) along with junior teammates Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA) and Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) all won their respective matchups to help lead Worcester State to a 9-0 triumph over Becker in non-conference women's tennis action this evening.
The victory marked the first of the season for the Lancers (1-2) while the Hawks fall to 1-3 in the setback.
At second doubles, Tomasetti teamed with Candelieri for the 8-2 victory over sophomore Kerry Saltvick (Bakersfield, CA) and senior Shauna Buckly (Danvers, MA) before Michanczyk and Sarkis earned the win at third doubles by a score of 8-0.
As the top doubles seed, freshman Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA) and sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, MA) also won their matchup, 8-0.
In singles action, Candelieri, Jankins, Michanzyk, Tomasetti, Sarkis and junior Miranda Biron (Webster, MA) all defeated their opponents in consecutive sets.
The closest score was with Candelieri at first singles, but she dispatched sophomore Cameron Murphy (Weymouth, MA), 6-3 and 6-4.
In the week ahead both teams open up their respective conference schedules on Saturday at 1 o'clock with road match-ups. Worcester State starts Little East Conference play with UMass-Boston while Becker heads down I-90 to face off against Regis in an NECC matchup.
