Rhode Island College Defeats Women's Tennis, 8-1

 

Providence, RI --- Rhode Island College took five singles matchups and swept doubles to post a 8-1 victory over Worcester State in Little East Conference women's tennis action on Saturday afternoon at the RIC Tennis Courts.

The Anchorwomen (10-1, 4-0 LEC) started off the match with sophomore Saddie Campanella (Chepachet, RI) and freshman Jorgie Martin (Smithfield, RI) defeated freshman Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA) and sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) at first doubles, 8-6.

RIC first-year Julie Reddy (Greenville, RI) and classmate Noelle Tiberi (Smithfield, RI) followed with an 8-4 win at second doubles.

Junior Chelsey Brown (Wallingford, CT) and sophomore Tressa Cannata (Chepachet, RI) then added the point at third doubles to hand senior teamates Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) just their second setback of the season. 

The hosts clinched the match with solo wins by Campanella, Brown, Cannata, Reddy and Tiberi.

For the Lancers (5-4, 2-2 LEC) Sarkis earned the lone triumph for the Lancers with a solid 6-2 and 6-2 victory at sixth singles. Jankins also lost in a tie-breaker at second singles as she was bested by Brown, 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (10-4).

Both squads return to conference play on Tuesday afternoon at 3:30. Worcester State hosts UMass Dartmouth at Wachusett High School while the Anchorwomen face off against Bridgewater State in a battle of league unbeatens at BSU.
