Women's Tennis Falls To UMass Dartmouth, 7-2

 

Holden, MA --- UMass Dartmouth scored four singles points and all three doubles matches to defeat Worcester State, 7-2, in Little East Conference women's tennis action on Thursday afternoon at Wachusett High School.

With the win the Corsairs improve to 5-2 and 3-1 in the Little East while the Lancers even out to 5-5 and fall to 2-3 in the LEC.

UMD senior Nicole Pelletier (Swansea, MA) and junior Hannah Schultz (Chelmsford, MA) bested sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) and Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA), 8-6, as the top doubles seed and senior Casey Auman (N. Dartmouth, MA) paired with Elizabeth Cignoli (Springfield, MA) for the 8-4 win at second doubles.

Senior teamates Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) and Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) fell to freshman Katelyn Capone (Abington, MA) and senior Alex Post (Plymouth, MA) at third doubles, 8-6.

Pelletier won her matchup at first singles followed by Schultze who bested Jankins, 6-4 and 7-5, at second singles. Sheperd lost her matchup to Auman, 6-4 and 6-4, before Capone dispatched junior Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) at fifth singles.

Michanczyk and Sarkis rebounded with wins at fourth and sixth singles, respectively. Michanczyk's point went to a tiebreaker before she defeated Cignoli, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10), and Sarkis defeated her opponent in straight sets, 6-0 and 6-0.

With her victory at fourth singles, Michanczyk moves into the top five in all-time scoring with 44 career points to her credit (21 singles - 23 doubles).

Worcester State will take the weekend off before heading to Western Connecticut for a 4 PM meeting on Tuesday. UMass Dartmouth travels to Southern Maine on Saturday in a 12 PM match-up.
