Women's Tennis Posts 9-0 Win Over Western Connecticut

 

Danbury, CT --- Worcester State swept all six singles matchups and every doubles point to defeat Western Connecticut, 9-0, in Little East women's tennis action this afternoon at the Westside Campus Courts.

With the win, the Lancers improve to 6-5 overall and are now 3-3 in the Little East Conference.  The Colonials fall to 1-8 overall and 0-5 in league play.

The Blue and Gold cruised through doubles including sophomore Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) and freshman Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA) defeating junior Alyssa Panasci (Goshen, CT) and freshman Olivia Mauro (Harwinton, CT), 8-2 at top pairs.

At number four singles, WSCU first-year Carine Jacque' (New London, CT) pushed senior Brooke Michanczyk (Middletown, CT) to a deciding third set before falling, 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 in a final-set pro set.

Sophomore Alisa Yongkod (New Fairfield, CT) and second-year Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) battled in fifth solos before the visiting Goncalves prevailed, 7-5, 6-3.

WSU also won solo play points at top flight singles with a win from junior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA), senior Laura Sarkis (W. Springfield, MA) at sixth singles, Jankins at second singles and Shepard at third singles.

In doubles action, Candelieri and junior Taylor Tomasetti (Waterford, CT) dispatched their opponents as the second seed and Michanczyk along with Sarkis were victorious, 8-1, to improve their mark at 7-2 in third doubles match-ups on the campaign.

With her two wins this afternoon, Michanczyk is now alone in fourth place on the all-time scoring list with 46 points as she passed Sue MacDonald (1982-84).

The Lancers will play again on Saturday in a home meeting against Plymouth State at Clark's Corash Courts at noontime. Western Connecticut heads to UMass-Boston for a 3 o'clock make-up game on Thursday.
