Women's Tennis Posts 7-2 Win Over Crosstown Rival Clark

 

Worcester, MA --- Worcester State won five of six singles matches and the visiting Lancers breezed to a 7-2 win over Clark University in non-league women's tennis action on Thursday evening at the Corash Tennis Courts.

With the win Worcester State improved to 6-1 on the season, while the Cougars slip to 2-7 overall.

Clark actually got off to a flying start with freshman Isabelle Long (Bellevue, WA) and classmate Misa Mai (Sanford, Maine) topping senior Danielle Candelieri (Chelmsford, MA) and first-year Natalie Paul (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy), 8-1 as the top seed.

After that, Worcester State took the next two pairs play match-ups beginning with sophmore Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA) and junior Megan Shepard getting past junior Rebecca Kravetz (Wayland, MA) and teammate Kera Snyder (Portland, ME), 8-6 at second doubles. 

Freshman Rachel Green (Worcester, MA/Worcester Academy) and junior Paige Moriarty (Feeding Hills, MA) followed with squeaking by senior Sarah Clay (Ossipee, NH) and rookie Fiorella Hernandez (Mangua, Nicaragua) 9-8 (2) in a tiebreaker at third doubles

Long opened up singles play for the Cougars with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jankins at the top of the ladder to make the score 2-2, but it was all Worcester State after that.

Candelieri defeated Kravetz 6-1, 6-1 at second singles and Paul followed that up with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Snyder at third singles.

Freshman Faina Volf (Sharon, MA) posted a straight set, 6-1, 6-1 win over Mai at fourth singles and Shepard moved past Hernandez 6-2, 6-2 at fifth singles. Junior Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) wrapped up the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Leah Siegel-Reamer at sixth singles.

Both teams play conference opponents on Saturday. Worcester State heads to Bridgewater State for a 1 PM contest while Clark heads to Emerson for a 1:30 start.
