Women's Tennis Defeated In LEC Matchup By UMass Dartmouth, 5-4

 

N. Dartmouth, MA --- Highlighted by wins at singles and doubles by UMass Dartmouth junior Kristen Rose (Dartmouth, MA) and sophomore Rosalie Kimba (Milford, MA), the Corsairs defeated Worcester State, 5-4, in Little East Conference women's tennis action this afteroon at the UMD Campus Tennis Courts.

With the victory, UMass Dartmouth moves to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the LEC while the Lancers slide to 6-3 and 2-3 in the Little East.

Rose and Kimba teamed up for the 8-2 victory at second doubles before UMD freshmen teammates Therese Nguyen (S. Easton, MA) and Mollie McCaffrey (Taunton, MA) picked up the 8-5 triumph at third doubles. 

Worcester State, however, did end doubles trailing 2-1 after junior Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT) and sophomore Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, MA) posted an 8-4 win as the top seed during pairs play.

UMD though earned wins at second singles by freshman Kerry Magoon (Marshfield, MA) and with Kimba at sixth singles.

The Lancers also registered straight set wins with Jankins at first singles and freshman Faina Volf (Sharon, MA) at third singles while Shepard came from a set down by dispatching her opponent, 2-6, 7-5 and 6-2 as the fourth seed.

With the contest tied up 4-4, it was Rose who came through for the Corsairs as she defeated junior Cassandra Goncalves (Ludlow, MA) at fifth singles, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4 to clinch the match for the hosts.

Both squads return to action on Tuesday. Worcester State hosts Western Connecticut at Clark in a 3:30 matchup as UMD travels to Bridgewater State for a 3 o'clock start.
