Rhode Island College Rolls Past Worcester State, 9-0

Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College women's tennis team used a complete team effort secure their ninth straight victory and fifth shutout as they defeated Worcester State, 9-0, in Little East Conference action played at the RIC Tennis Courts Wednesday afternoon.



Doubles action saw the RIC (9-1, 5-0 LEC) tandem of sophomore Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) and junior partner Julie Reddy (Smithfield, R.I.) defeat WSU (5-7, 3-4 LEC) junior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, Mass.) and senior Megan Shepard (Middletown, Conn.), 8-2, at the No. 1 pairing.



No. 2 doubles saw senior Sadie Campanella (Chepachet, R.I.) and junior Jorgie Martin (Greenville, R.I.) best WSU's sophomore pairing of Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.), 8-0.



RIC earned the doubles sweep with senior Tressa Cannata (Cranston, R.I.) and sophomore Laura Nastasi (Smithville, NJ) topping sophomores Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and Olivia Budney (Webster, Mass.), 8-3.



Reilly topped Jankins (6-0, 6-4) at the No. 1 flight, while Campanella earned the victory over Shepard (6-0, 6-0) at No. 2 singles.



No. 3 singles saw Reddy defeat Khafaga (6-1, 6-0) with Cannata besting Green (6-2, 6-1) at the No. 4 flight.



Nastasi topped Budney (6-2, 6-0) at the No. 5 flight, while Martin defeated freshman Valerie Tocco (Pelham, NH) (4-6, 6-1, 10-1) at No. 6 singles to complete the sweep for the Anchorwomen.

 

The Worcester State women's tennis team will be back in action next week as they will take on non-conference opponent Roger Williams on Oct. 13, and then they will round up their regular season with a conference match against Plymouth State for a home match played at Clark on Oct. 17.
