Roger Williams Sweeps Worcester State in Friday Afternoon Match

HOLDEN, Mass. – The Roger Williams Hawks swept the Worcester State Lancers 9-0 in Friday afternoon's tennis match hosted by Worcester State at the Wachusett Regional High School tennis courts.

 

With the win, the Hawks advance to 5-1 on the season, while the Lancers fall to 2-2.

 

Roger Williams came away with a singles sweep as the Hawks' Ali Stankiewicz (Brunswick, Me.) shutout her opponent Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) 6-0, 6-0 to begin. Also coming close to a shutout was Roger Williams' Julia Akerman (Greenwich, Conn.), Taryn Roche (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Jaime Lessard (Jamesport, N.Y.) who defeated their opponents six-to-little.

 

Worcester State's Shelby Jankins (W. Brookfield, Mass.) and Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) put up a fight in the singles loss. Jankins was defeated by opponent, Harley Kaiserman (Setauket, N.Y.) 2-6, 3-6 and Taylor lost in a tiebreaker of 4-10 to Kathryn Hughs (Westford, Mass.) following scores of 6-0, 3-6.

 

In the Hawks' doubles sweep, Akerman and Allie Grinavic (N. Attleboro, Mass.) defeated Jankins and Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles 8-1. Worcester's Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and Isabel Badeau (Cumberland, R.I.) were defeated by duo Hannah Schrader (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) and Emily Marble (Medfield, Mass.) 8-2 at the No. 3 doubles.

 

The closest doubles match of the afternoon was between partners Taylor and Khafaga who fell to Caroline McCarthy (Carver, Mass.) and Jessica Magliato (New Rochelle, N.Y.) 7-9.

 

The Hawks and Lancers continue play tomorrow when Roger Williams hosts conference foe Wentworth, and Worcester State hosts conference opponent, UMass Boston.
