WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team dropped its first match of 2017 the season to the visiting Plymouth State Panthers by a score of 7-2 in a Saturday afternoon Little East Conference (LEC) match at the Corash tennis courts.

THE MATCH
The Panthers began the day with a 3-0 sweep of doubles play. The closest competition at the doubles was at the No. 1 flight when Plymouth State's Sage Winter (New Castle, N.H.) and Irene Kigugu (Concord, N.H.) defeated Worcester State's Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) 8-6. Plymouth State's double partners of Maggie McCarthy (Marion, Mass.)/Megan Wheeler (Manchester, N.H.) and Jenna Sundquist (Monument Beach, Mass.)/Chloe Knapp (Jamestown, N.Y.) downed their opponents of Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.)/Isabel Badeau (Cumberland, R.I.) and Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.)/Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.), respectively, by scores of 8-5.
Plymouth State earned the LEC victory in in singles play as they went 4-2 overall. At the No. 1 and No, 5 flights, Plymouth State's Winter and Sundquist defeated their opponents by scores of 6-0, 6-1. Tight battles were seen at No. 2 and No. 6 singles, when McCarthy and Khafaga battled at the No. 2 spot, and Knapp edged Mularski at the No. 6 slot, however Plymouth came out on top in both occurrences. Worcester State's two points of the day came at No. 3 and No. 4 singles when Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and Alves conquered their opponents.
UP NEXT
The Lancers return to the courts on Tuesday, Sep. 19 when they host UMass Dartmouth in a LEC matchup at the Wachusett Regional High School tennis courts. The Panthers resume on the same date when they host Salem State in a 3:30 p.m. match at the Holderness School.
