Strong Singles Play Leads Lancers to 6-3 Win over UMass Boston

BOSTON – After falling behind 2-1 in doubles play, the Worcester State University women's tennis team came through in singles play and defeated the Beacons of UMass Boston by a score of 6-3 Saturday afternoon.

THE MATCH

Worcester State started out with the first win of the day as doubles partners Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) defeated UMass Boston's Kathleen Conroy (Quincy, Mass.) and Meghan Erickson (Hubbardston, Mass.) by a score of 8-1. However, UMass Boston battled back and took the 2-1 lead going into singles as Martina Daelli (Florence, Italy) and Valeria Tueme (Bonney Lake, Wash.) defeated Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and Isabel Badeau (Cumberland, R.I.) 8-2, and Kristy Garcia (Miami, Fla.) and Katie Gauthier (W. Boylston, Mass.) battled with Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and Lauren Taylor (Attleboro, Mass.) and came out on top 9-8 (7-3).

 

Worcester State knotted the score at No. 4 singles when Alves defeated Gauthier 6-1, 6-1. The Lancers took the lead at the No. 2 singles spot when Khafaga defeated Daelli 6-2, 6-3. UMass Boston tied with the Lancers once again with a No. 1 singles win as Garcia defeated Taylor 6-1, 6-1. However, the Lancers came back with singles wins from Green, Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.) and Silk to seal the 6-3 win.

 

COACHES CORNER

"We were a little slow to start this afternoon after a late night last night," commented head coach Courteney Blais. "The girls fired themselves up after being down 2-1 after doubles and played strong and focused singles matches."

The Lancers return to action on Tuesday (Sep. 26) when they travel to Western Connecticut for a Little East matchup.
