Women’s Tennis Earns 8-1 Little East Conference Win over Southern Maine

GORHAM, Maine – The Worcester State University women's tennis team cruised past the Huskies of Southern Maine 8-1 Saturday afternoon in a Little East Conference (LEC) match played at the Costello Sports Complex field house. The match was moved indoors due to wet courts at Gorham High School.

THE MATCH

The Worcester State University women's tennis team swept the Huskies in doubles play as the No. 1 doubles squad of Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) shutout their opponents 8-0. At both No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, Worcester State came away with 8-3 wins, leading 3-0 going into singles play.

 

Courtney Jordan (Portland, Maine) earned University of Southern Maine's lone point taking the No. 1 singles matches when Worcester State's Taylor retired. Jordan had taken the first set in a tiebreaker 7-6 (8-6), and was leading 4-3 in the second at the time.

 

Singles wins by Khafaga and senior Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, clinched the victory for the visitors.  Khafaga downed Southern Maine's senior Rikki Demoranville (Madawaska, Maine), and Silk dispatched junior Margaret Smith (Farmingdale, Maine), in straight sets.

 

Worcester State's Alves, Monika Mularski (Auburn, Mass.), and Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) earned the other three singles wins at the 4-5-6 flights, respectively.

"Today's match was the spark we needed for the second half of the season," commented head coach Courteney Blais.  "Everyone played great today."

 

 

UP NEXT

Worcester State will be at home on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.) hosting in-state rival Salem State University in an LEC match.  The match will be played at Wachusett Regional High School.
