Women’s Tennis Edged by Clark, 5-4

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Worcester State University women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to cross-town foes, Clark University, Tuesday afternoon as the Cougars edged the Lancers 5-4.

THE MATCH

Worcester State began the match with two wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Worcester's Rachel Green (Worcester, Mass.) and Marissa Lombardi (Ludlow, Mass.) defeated Maggie Tarbox (Lebanon, Conn.) and Chloe Dunnell (Montclair, N.J.) at the third spot by a score of 8-2, while doubles partners of Nathalie Khafaga (Auburn, Mass.) and Dominique Alves (Ludlow, Mass.) downed Isabell Long (Bellevue, Wash.) and Elizabeth Garfield (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) 8-1 at the top flight. Clark came away with a win at No. 2 doubles when Anna Gates (North Scituate, R.I.) and Katie Benson (Huston, Mass.) defeated Alexis Silk (Greenfield, Mass.) and Isabel Badeau (Cumberland, R.I.) 8-4.

 

The Cougars tied the score at 2-2 with a No. 6 singles win when Elizabeth Tchantouridze (Northfield, Vt.) topped Victoria Konicki (Auburn, Mass.) 6-0, 6-1. They took the first lead of the afternoon with a No. 1 singles win when Long defeated Khafaga 6-4, 6-2. Worcester State took the lead for the final time as they saw a No. 2 and No. 3 singles win from Silk and Alves. However, Clark's Garfield knotted the score at 4-4, and Benson sealed the win for the Cougars at the No. 5 spot to clinch the match.
